Anthem Delayed

It’s now official. Anthem has been delayed.

EA announced that the long anticipate multiplayer action RPG game that’s being developed by BioWare and that features an open world, will not be released until 2019.

A completely new gaming franchise, Anthem was first announced by EA at last year’s E3. There they also showed off an extensive demo of the game, in which players — who are called “freelancers” and who wear giant exosuits — inhabit a world that reminded some of those that exist in the Destiny franchise, which is created by Bungie. In this new world, the players collect various articles after being dropped off in random locations. At the time of the show, EA said that the game would be released sometime in the fall of 2018 and that it would be available for PCs and consoles.

Blake Jorgensen, who is the chief financial officer of EA, insists that the delay shouldn’t be called as such. He says that the moving of the release date to 2019 is an opportunity. An opportunity to give the game, which is an entirely new property, the attention it needs in order to succeed in what is at the moment a very competitive marketplace.

Jorgensen also disputed a recent news story that claimed that the game would be delayed because the development of it was behind schedule. He said that the report was nothing more than someone trying to spin a story.

Microsoft Buys PlayFab

Microsoft announced that it has acquired PlayFab. They also said that they intend on integrating the firm into the company’s Azure gaming group.

PlayFab is a startup company based in Seattle that provides backend services to game developers, which help these developers get their games online more quickly. The company had previously raised around $13 million in venture capital.

Kareem Choudhry, who is the corporate vice president of gaming for Microsoft, said that with PlayFab onboard, Azure will continue to be on the forefront of building intelligent cloud services for the gaming industry. Services that he says that will not only benefit game developers but also game players.

James Gwertzman, who is the chief executive officer of PlayFab, noted that he and his co-founder started the company 4 years ago to help lead the transition in the gaming industry from packaged games to online services, which require sophisticated backend systems to find and keep players, and to monetize games.

The services PlayFab offers game developers include a hosting platform that incorporates powerful analytics. This has helped game developers get their titles to market much faster than they would have been able to do otherwise.

PlayFab’s has been popular with small independent game developers, but its services have also attracted big names in the gaming industry, such as NBCUniversal, Disney, Capcom and Rovio. About 1,200 games are now running on the company’s platform, and they say that they process in excess of 1.5 billion transactions every day.

Microsoft Acquires New Game Development Platform

Microsoft announced on Monday that they have finalized a deal to buy Playfab Inc., a Seattle startup that owns the online game development platform Playfab. The move has been seen as Microsoft’s effort to compete with Amazon’s popular Amazon Web Services game development suite. Playfab’s software will be incorporated into Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service.

The company’s Playfab software allows game developers to build and manage their online games without having to worry about creating back-end services from the ground up. Developers can also monitor their users and more easily monetize their games.

Playfab was founded in 2014 by James Gwertzman, the former Vice President of Asia at Popcap Games, and Matt Augustine, a former engineer at Microsoft. By 2016, the startup had raised $13 million in funding from venture capital firms like Benchmark and TEEC Angel Fund. The software proved popular with both independent developers and larger companies. Playfab quickly attracted big-name clients like Atari, Disney, Nickelodeon and NBC Universal. The platform currently boasts 1,200 active games and processes more than 1.5 billion transactions each day. Popular games like Idle Miner Tycoon, Angry Birds: Seasons and Roller Coaster Tycoon Touch have been developed using Playfab.

Cross-Platform Title ‘Monster Hunter World’ Proves a Success for Capcom

While planned for a PC release later this year, leading Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu claims that “Monster Hunter World” has already sold 1.35 million physical units within Japan. When one looks beyond the game’s sales figures in Japan and also considers the digital market place, it seems the title has exceeded two million units.

Monster Hunter is a title that has primarily been a go-to title on handheld gaming devices like the PSP and 3DS. Despite this, the title has seemingly sold more than two million units in a country that only owns six million PS4s; Monster Hunter World is a title found on one-third of every Japanese PS4 and an unknown number of Xbox One consoles. Monster Hunter World’s success also makes it the best-selling PS4 title in Japan.

Citation of Japan’s sales figures matters when discussing the title’s overall appeal; the intention of a global launch on a home console was perceived as a blow to Japanese sales figures and causing analysts to assess the sales figures of non-Japanese markets where the Monster Hunter series has sold far less. Despite these worries, Monster Hunter World has only received a glowing review across the world; Capcom made a recent announcement that it had shipped five million units across the planet. EA Moves Back Release Date of Anthem to 2019

After much speculation, Electronic Arts has officially confirmed to be moving back the release date of the new BioWare-developed RPG Anthem from fall of 2018 to sometime in 2019.

First announced at E3 2017, EA presented a gameplay trailer of a new gaming property, marketed as multiplayer action-RPG in similar fashion to Bungie and Activision’s Destiny franchise. From what information is available, players will seemingly be able to interact with each other in an open world environment filled with various alien creatures, collecting equipment and rewards through a randomized drop system.

No concrete reason has been given yet as to why Anthem has been delayed, though EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen claims that “it’s not a delay” despite having the release date moved back. Jorgensen has so far mentioned that the company hopes to give Anthem more time to gain attention as a new franchise, as well as give developers a chance to develop the game’s story. He also claims that, contrary to a Kotaku report released recently, the game’s development is not behind schedule.

It is also possible EA has chosen to delay the release of Anthem due to the massive loot box controversy the company found itself in following the release of Star Wars Battlefront II, fearing that the blowback could negatively impact the sales of a new title.
