ClassDojo Transforms Class Communication

Sam Chaudhary came to California in 2011 with the goal of creating an educational tech start up company. He and his partner, Liam Don, created an app that grew in popularity quickly. They started from a blank slate, going to the teacher’s to see what was really needed for the classroom. They wanted to use their product to help with the question “What is the worst part of teaching?” With that drive and desire to help teachers, ClassDojo was created.

ClassDojo is a communication platform that gives parents the empowerment to stay connected with their child’s education. It works like a social media site, where teachers, students, and parents share information and memories to create a community like atmosphere in the classroom. This platform has caused a ground up change in the classroom. It is used in 2 of 3 schools across the country.

The startup raised 21 million in its second round of funding as compared to the 8.5 million in the first round. They want to keep ClassDojo free, but they envision features for at home use parents may wish to pay for. ClassDojo remains free for teachers, students, and parents and is available through apple, android, and pc. Teachers now are able to upload pics and videos to share experience. Students will be able to share their experiences and make a digital portfolio.

ClassDojo helps to keep the exchange of communication going between teachers and parents going, so those infrequent meetings are not full of surprises. Teachers do not have to worry with phone calls as much, and they have more time to make the positive calls. Those positive communications are what foster a good relationship between school and home.

ClassDojo is an app and web site accessible from most devices. It allows teachers to easily share communication, progress, and moments with parents to help keep them connected. The app has evolved from the communication/social media tool it started out as and has moved towards helping students accept ownership of their learning. With Student Story, students are able to collect memories from the class they want to share.
